Zelda Cloud Saves

Zelda Switch 2 Editions: No Cloud Saves for Breath of the Wild & Tears of the Kingdom?

Gaming

Hold up, Zelda fans! It looks like the upcoming Switch 2 Editions of both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom might be missing a pretty important feature: cloud saves. Yes, you read that right. According to listings on the Nintendo eShop, these enhanced versions won't support backing up your save data to the cloud.

This is kind of a big deal. The store pages for the games have a disclaimer that specifically states, "Please note: this software does not support the Nintendo Switch Online paid membership's Save Data Cloud backup feature." Ouch.

What makes this even weirder is that other updated games coming to the Switch 2, like Super Mario Party Jamboree, Metroid Prime 4, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land, don't have this disclaimer. So, why are Link's adventures being singled out?

The Mystery Deepens

The plot thickens! Apparently, this disclaimer is only showing up on the US and EU eShop pages. Over in Japan, the store page still indicates that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for using cloud saves. Talk about confusing!

Eurogamer has reached out to Nintendo for some clarification, and we're eagerly awaiting their response. In the meantime, let's speculate a little, shall we?

Why This Matters

So, why is this lack of cloud save support a problem? Well, as pointed out by a user on ResetEra, if you transfer your save file from the original Switch version to the Switch 2 Edition, you won't be able to create new cloud saves going forward. That means if your Switch 2 bites the dust, your progress is gone. Poof!

Even if you start a brand new game on the Switch 2 Edition, it seems you're still locked out of cloud saves. It's a risky situation, especially for a game as sprawling and time-consuming as Zelda.

What We Do Know

Despite the cloud save kerfuffle, the Switch 2 Editions of these Zelda games do offer some tempting upgrades. We're talking improved visual performance, an updated in-game app with achievements, and even a new way to repair your precious equipment. That's something!

In the UK, these complete editions will set you back £65, with all the game data conveniently included on the game card. However, keep in mind that Breath of the Wild on Switch 2 won't include the original game's DLC. So, if you want that extra content, you'll need to stick with your original copy.

We'll keep you updated as we learn more about this cloud save situation. Stay tuned!
