Take-Two CEO Skeptical: AI Can't Replicate the Genius of GTA 6
So, the head honcho at Take-Two Interactive, Strauss Zelnick, is back at it again, sharing his thoughts on AI. This time, he's suggesting that something like GTA 6 simply couldn't be made by artificial intelligence because, well, according to him, AI can't really be creative.
Zelnick, who once called AI an "oxymoron," has always been pretty balanced about the whole AI situation. He's said before that he's excited about how it could help Take-Two be more efficient, but he also believes that creating truly great games requires human genius. And, you know, he thinks genius is a human thing.
During a recent CNBC event, he went deeper into why he thinks AI is too "derivative" to be properly creative. One of his big worries is copyright. He said they have to protect their own intellectual property and respect others' too. If you make something with AI, he argues, it's tough to protect it legally. Basically, Take-Two needs to make sure their stuff follows copyright laws and protects people's rights, which puts some limits on using AI.
But, beyond the legal stuff, Zelnick also thinks AI's "backward looking" nature—because it relies on old data—makes it too derivative for real creativity. He wondered if they could just push a button and have AI create a marketing plan as good as the one for Grand Theft Auto. His answer? A resounding no. He doesn't think the tech is there yet, and even if it was, he believes the result would be pretty unoriginal.
He added that AI is great for things that are predictable based on data, but when it comes to what Take-Two does—creating new, innovative entertainment—AI just won't cut it.
Specifically talking about Grand Theft Auto, Zelnick pointed out that Rockstar Games always aims for near-perfection. He doesn't believe AI can achieve that level of creativity because it's entirely based on existing data. In my opinion, he has a point; the magic of games often comes from those unpredictable, innovative ideas that you just can't program.
As a side note, GTA 6 is now expected to launch on May 26th, 2026, after its recent delay. Let's hope the human developers can keep that perfectionist touch!
