Oblivion Remastered Released: A New Look for the Classic RPG
After years of speculation, Bethesda has officially unveiled The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered! The trailer showcases a visually stunning overhaul of the classic RPG, promising a fresh experience for both veterans and newcomers alike. And the best part? It's available now!
The remaster, priced at £50 on Steam, boasts significant improvements. Developers highlighted key changes during a recent showcase, including the highly anticipated addition of sprinting. The levelling system has also been revamped, drawing inspiration from both Oblivion and Skyrim to address the original's divisive level scaling.
Enhanced Features and Visuals
Beyond gameplay tweaks, Oblivion Remastered features a new lip-syncing system for more believable character interactions, along with re-recorded dialogue to better suit the game's diverse races. The third-person perspective has been modernized, eliminating the infamous "roller-skating" effect. Of course, the visuals have been completely remade with real-time lighting, updated VFX, a redesigned user interface, and enhanced sound effects.
While some elements have been modernized, others remain faithful to the original. The lockpicking minigame and speechcraft persuasion system retain their core mechanics, albeit with a visual update.
Developed in Unreal Engine 5 by Virtuos in collaboration with Bethesda, the remaster is built upon a modified version of the Creation Engine. This blend of new technology and familiar foundations aims to deliver a nostalgic yet contemporary experience.
A Long-Anticipated Reveal
Rumors of the Oblivion remaster have circulated since 2023, fueled by leaked Microsoft documents and reports from various sources. Speculation intensified with details emerging about reworked stamina and stealth mechanics, culminating in the surprise release alongside the official announcement.
The question now is whether the remaster can capture the magic of the original while addressing its shortcomings. Will it retain Oblivion's unique charm, or will the modernization strip away its personality? Only time will tell if this new version is a worthy successor to the beloved classic.
