Microsoft's New Gaming Head Vows 'No Tolerance' for Bad AI Amid Community Concerns
So, Microsoft's got a new boss for gaming, Asha Sharma, and people are understandably curious, even a bit worried, considering her background isn't exactly rooted in the gaming world. She's coming from the AI side of Microsoft, which, let's face it, has some folks raising eyebrows. After all, Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond departure left a hole, and many people were wondering who would take over.
But, hold on, Sharma's already addressing the elephant in the room. She told Variety that she has "no tolerance" for "bad" AI. So, at least we know she's not planning to unleash some sort of AI-generated gaming apocalypse. AI's been creeping into games for a while, and she recognizes it's part of the future, but good news, she's reassuring us that the heart of gaming – those awesome stories – will still come from human creativity.
Now, about her not being a "gamer" in the traditional sense. Sharma gets it. She knows she's got a learning curve ahead. However, she's promising to listen to the community – that's us! – and build a platform that earns our trust. In her words, she's "coming into gaming as a platform builder". I believe that, in the end, might be a good thing, if she's focusing on what we want.
She wants Xbox to deliver stories that hit us right in the feels, with deep emotions and a unique point of view. She mentioned Firewatch, that indie hit from Campo Santo, as a game that really impacted her. That's a good sign, I think. It means she appreciates the power of narrative and emotional connection in games. It shows that she is commited to "being grounded in what the community is telling" Xbox.
If you ask me, it all sounds promising. I am curious to hear what Xbox has up its sleeve. Sharma mentioned we'll get a sneak peek at GDC next month, and then some bigger announcements are coming this spring during an Xbox Games Showcase. I'm definitely keeping my eyes peeled.
