Did you know that the original Metal Gear Solid 3 on PS2 had a reworked Zone of the Enders 3 prototype stashed away inside? I sure didn't! This hidden gem is called "Guy Savage," a simple hack-and-slash game featuring hook swords, crazy transformations, and even zombie cops. It's presented as a dream sequence from Naked Snake, triggered by some intense torture and a slightly off-topic Dracula reference from Para-Medic. How wild is that?

The original Guy Savage was directed by Shuyo Murata, a long-time writer for Metal Gear Solid. Now, this dreamy minigame is making a comeback in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, which is launching next week. But here's the cool part: this time, it's getting a major visual upgrade, since PlatinumGames, the studio behind Bayonetta, is in charge of the remake. They've totally revamped the visuals, swapping the old jail backdrop for a spooky moonlit graveyard, although the core spinning and slashing action seems to be pretty much the same.

A Blast from the Past

Learning about Guy Savage gives me the creeps, in a good way. Delta Snake Eater represents Konami's attempt to demonstrate that Metal Gear Solid can thrive after Hideo Kojima, but it also pays tribute to him, carefully recreating every quirky detail that emerged during his time. It's like they're saying, "We remember everything, even the weird stuff!".

For me, Delta Snake Eater feels different from your average remake because Kojima built a brand for designer's asides – those brilliant or silly touches that came from his obsessions. Konami has taken all those details and given them a fresh coat of paint, then stuck them back into the game. In the case of Guy Savage, it's like they took the remains of another game, the cancelled Zone of the Enders threequel, and brought it back to life. Apparently, Kojima initially wanted the minigame to be Gradius, but decided an original game would be better. Can you imagine?

I think it's so strange! Video games are weird! They are the ultimate haunted houses. This is probably the only thing I've discovered about Delta Snake Eater that seriously interests me. We'll hopefully have a review ourselves before the remake's release next week, on 28th August.
