Hyper Light Breaker Revamps Gameplay with Buried Below Update

Games

Hyper Light Breaker, after a rocky early access launch, is set to receive a massive update titled "Buried Below" on April 29th. Developer Heart Machine is making significant changes to address player feedback and improve the overall experience.

Core Structure Rework

The update focuses on a complete overhaul of the game's core mechanics. Instead of three lives per run, players will now have only one, raising the stakes considerably. Upon death, most items will be lost, encouraging a more strategic approach to each run. Extracting loot will be easier, as players can now do it at any shrine, without needing to fight off waves of enemies.

SyComs and New Player Experience

The update also introduces a class-like system for SyComs, the player's robotic companions. Each Breaker gets a SyCom with fixed stats, which can be customized with perks. Additionally, a much-needed tutorial has been added to guide new players through the game's mechanics.

New Breaker, Crown, and Underground Area

The "Buried Below" update introduces Rondo, a new Breaker with abilities that enhance flash-stepping and parrying. Players will also be able to explore a new underground area, leading to a new Crown (boss) called Maw - a dragon whose attack patterns evoke the popular game Returnal.. Caves will now appear across the map, adding to the sense of exploration.

Heart Machine's willingness to rework the core structure of Hyper Light Breaker demonstrates a commitment to creating a compelling game. These changes are a welcome development for players who were put off by the initial early access release, and it may be time to give Hyper Light Breaker another shot.
