FF16 on Switch 2? Producer Hints at Potential Port After Xbox Release, Fueling Speculation
Hey there, fellow gamers! It seems like the whispers around a Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 16 are getting louder. You know Naoki Yoshida, the producer of the game, dropped a little hint during a Final Fantasy 14 livestream, and now the internet is buzzing. So, after the Xbox version release, could Nintendo be next?
During the Final Fantasy 14 stream, after discussing the newly released Xbox version, Yoshida casually said "Just Nintendo left". Then, adding fuel to the fire, creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro replied he "will do his best". Now, this could be just a joke between colleagues, but it definitely sounds like Square Enix is at least thinking about bringing FF16 to Nintendo's next console.
Think about it: Square Enix is clearly embracing a multiplatform strategy, with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake games also headed to Switch 2. If they are doing it for FFVII, why not FF16? However, there are some serious questions that need to be asked. Can the Switch 2 even handle Final Fantasy 16? Some reports say that, to achieve stable framerates, the Xbox Series X/S version had to implement a resolution drop. So, considering the Switch 2 is less powerful, how would it run, especially in handheld mode?
Another thing to consider is, has Final Fantasy 16 sold well on Xbox? Reports say no, but Square Enix hasn't confirmed it yet. Even though going multiplatform opens the door to more sales, it may not be enough if the interest in FF16 isn't there, especially since it was released on PS5 two years ago. Maybe a simultaneous multiplatform launch would have been better, but the Switch 2 wasn't even on the table then. Regardless, other third-party games aren't selling super well on Switch 2, and that's because Nintendo's own games are the stars of the show.
Ultimately, we'll have to wait and see how Final Fantasy 7 Remake does on the Switch 2 later this year. That will be a great indicator of how Final Fantasy 16 might perform, if it ever makes its way to Nintendo's console. So, keep your fingers crossed, and let's hope for the best! Who knows, maybe we'll be exploring Valisthea on the go sooner than we think!
